Toronto's Beaches Struggle with Accessibility Barriers Only 3 of Toronto's 10 supervised beaches offer basic accessibility like mobi-mats and beach wheelchairs. This exclusion prevents many from enjoying the city's iconic waterfront. Kim Lumsdon, who uses a cane, calls navigating Cherry Beach "quite hazardous." Wade Watts, an accessibility consultant who uses a wheelchair, estimates under 15% of Canadian beaches meet standards. The City acknowledges its AODA commitments. But advocates argue more must be done to remove attitudinal barriers hindering true inclusion at public spaces. As our population ages, it's unacceptable that most Torontonians with disabilities can't freely access beaches. We must prioritize accessibility upgrades across ALL beaches - mobi-mats, ramps, beach wheelchairs and more. An accessible beach is an inclusive beach welcoming everyone equitably.
